Achieving the Long Standing Promise of battery storage
In this article, I explore how Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are finally delivering on a promise the electric utility industry has pursued for more than a century. From stabilizing the grid to enabling the integration of on-site energy resources, I examine why battery storage has become a cornerstone of grid modernization and the energy transition.
I discuss how BESS is transforming grid operations across generation, transmission, distribution, and customer levels enhancing reliability, improving efficiency, and supporting a more resilient and sustainable energy system. I also highlight the importance of collaboration, standardization, and operational excellence, including AEIC’s role in convening utilities to address safety, system integration, and best practices. Unlocking the full potential of battery storage requires not just technology, but coordinated leadership, sound regulation, and shared learning across the industry.
