Energy efficiency begins with visibility. Without clear insights into energy usage, efficiency goals remain abstract. To address this, Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) launched the Building Energy Usage Portal (BE-UP) in 2024, transforming raw meter data into accessible, actionable information for customers.

Originally motivated by commercial building benchmarking laws, BE-UP simplifies the complex task of aggregating energy data from multiple meters, automating reporting to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and eliminating manual paperwork. While designed for large buildings, O&R opened access to all customers, reflecting a philosophy of maximizing digital infrastructure value.

The portal empowers building owners, property managers, and energy consultants to identify inefficiencies, optimize operations, and access efficiency and decarbonization programs. It also supports grid planning by providing granular data for non-wires alternatives, aligning customer behavior with system management.

Key lessons from BE-UP include:

  • Modern infrastructure (AMI and billing systems) is essential.

  • Proper sequencing and system stability prevent launch issues.

  • Collaboration among IT, analytics, regulators, and vendors is critical.

  • Customer visibility drives efficiency markets and innovation.

BE-UP exemplifies how utilities can move beyond compliance, turning data into insight and insight into action, ultimately enabling smarter grids and more efficient, decarbonized buildings.
